To many people it would seem obvious that having access to play, learning outdoors and exploring the world around you is an essential part of childhood.
Schools across the nation have been taking part in a special activity to find out a little more about the wildlife on their doorstep.
The RSPB's (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) Big Schools' Birdwatch is rolling out in schools up and down the country, encouraging children to become part of the world's biggest wildlife survey.
