Ivor Novello Award winner hits a high note bringing music to study
Studytracks, the revolutionary student study app and brain child of Ivor Novello award-winner George Hammond-Hagan, has been credited with one of the education sector’shighest accolades: an Education Resource Award.
Studytracks was named Start-up of the Year at the Education Resources Awards on Friday night; the awards honour the quality and diversity of products supporting learning in schools.
It was when Hammond-Hagan’s son was 15 and studying for his GCSEs that he came up with the idea for Studytracks. “Getting him to sit and study without his music on was impossible,” said Hammond-Hagan. “However, after investing time into considering the relationship between music and revision, I quickly realised that learning can be moreeffective through the use of music. I took the instrumental of Fat Joe’s ‘lean back’, and put physics facts on it and played it to him. The effect was incredible; he was able to recall all the information.”

Studytracks V1.0 was launched in February 2016, allowing students to revise for exams on the go, in an enjoyable and effective way. The innovative, free app merges music with study materials, using lyrics relating to a specific exam theme or topic. At the end of every track, learners can then test their recall using the in-app quiz.
At present the app features over 400 songs within various subject categories for GCSE and AS Level revision. Studytracks works by turning topics into easy to remember “hooks”. As the student listens to the music, these hooks become embedded in their memory - just like the lyrics to a song - so that when something triggers the hook (like a word or phase in an exam question) students are able to recall the information easily and effectively.
Over 34,000 students have already downloaded the app from Google Play and the App Store, and it is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
Studytracks V2.0 launches in September 2016 and will include greater functionality, integration, and more songs. An exclusive platform version of the app for schools will also launch in October 2016.
