Festo Fields Apprentices for Mechatronics Competition

At The Skills Show, held on the 17-19th November at the NEC, Festo is entering the Mechatronics Competition, part of WorldSkills UK. This year two of Festo's apprentices, Ben Nolan and Joshan Tailor make up the team.

Eliza Rawlings, Managing Director at Festo, says, "WorldSkills UK is an exceptional opportunity for our young apprentices to put their skills to the test. It's an international stage to promote the mechatronic skills that will be needed in the future. We've been exhibiting at The Skills Show since 2011 and are delighted to be the Mechatronics Competition Sponsor. Every year we use the exhibition to connect with thousands of young people, their schools and their parents who attend the show and showcase engineering as a rewarding career path."

Mechatronics combines skills in mechanics, pneumatics, electronically controlled systems, programming, and robotics and systems development. Mechatronics technicians design, build, maintain and repair automated equipment, and also program equipment control systems. In the competition, Ben and Joshan are set a range of purely pneumatic, electro-pneumatic and PLC programming tasks, all with time constraints and set criteria in order to get maximum points.

Outstanding competitors, aged between 18 and 25, will then be invited to compete for a place in the team that represents the UK at the international WorldSkills competition, which is held every two years. The final will be held in Abu Dhabi in October 2017.

The WorldSkills Competition occurs every two years and is the biggest vocational education and skills excellence event in the world that truly reflects global industry. The competitors represent the best of their peers and are selected from skills competitions in WorldSkills Member countries and regions. They demonstrate technical abilities both individually and collectively to execute specific tasks, for which they study and/or perform in their workplace.
