York Minster is one of the world’s most magnificent cathedrals, a vision of heaven on earth crafted in stained glass and stone. For a millennia, people have been drawn to this sacred place but the story stretches back 2,000 years to the birth of modern day Christianity in Roman York.
York Minster’s dedicated Learning Team deliver a wide range of fascinating workshops and tours which meet curriculum needs and give students memories that can last a lifetime.
The cathedral offers three curriculum-linked packages for schools and colleges which can be delivered both inside the Minster and at their specialist Learning Centre. There is also the option to climb the Central Tower for unrivalled views of the city.
There is so much to see and do in York Minster, with world famous stained glass, historic artefacts and awe-inspiring architecture.
Option 1: The Learning Centre and the Minster
Spend an hour with the specialist Learning Team in the Learning Centre, located in St William’s College, next to the cathedral’s East End. Many of the workshops involve lots of hands-on activities including visiting the working replica of a masons’ loft, trying on vestments and discovering the stories behind real artefacts. The second hour is a guided tour of the Minster. Sessions are suitable for EYFS, KS1-4 and sixth form and college students.
Duration of visit: two hours
Cost: £6 per pupil
Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm
Option 2: Guided tour of the Minster
An insightful tour of the Minster which can kindle a lifelong interest in this magnificent cathedral. Tours can be adapted by the Learning Team to the interests of the group.
Duration of visit: one hour
Cost: £4 per pupil
Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 3pm
Numbers: 30 pupils max per guide
Option 3: Pre-booked self-conducted visit of the Minster
A copy of our treasure hunt trail is provided for each pupil.
Cost: £3 per pupil
One adult goes free with ten children. £8.50 each per additional adult (excluding staff required for KS1/SEN).
Option 4: Climb the Central Tower
There’s no better place for sightseeing in York than from the top of York Minster’s medieval central tower, the highest point in the whole of the city.
Climb up the winding tower of 275 steps, passing the medieval pinnacles and gothic gargoyles before stepping out into the open air to experience the best panoramic views of York’s picturesque city centre. Spy the hidden alleyways and medieval lanes and beyond the beautiful surrounding Yorkshire countryside.
Cost: £5 per child and adult
Groups of more than 10 children (aged 16 and under) must be accompanied by at least three adults. The first three adults climb the tower for free, additional adults pay the standard rate.
Groups of 10 or less must be accompanied by at least two adults. Please note if anyone needs to be escorted down from the tower the whole group must come down.
