The Green Britain Centre
The Green Britain Centre is a wonderful environment in which to inspire groups of all ages and abilities. Come and share our exciting vision for a Green Britain powered by the wind, the sun and the sea. Learn about renewable energy, new forms of transport and sustainable food. Our tailor-made talks, group activities and presentations will get your group talking about environmental issues and the world around them. And with activity sheets, problem solving and creative exercises, there’s loads to engage and inspire thinking around the issue of sustainability.
The Centre is home to the first windmill in the UK open to the public to climb, allowing you to experience wind power up close, right at the heart of the machine.Make the 300-step journey to the viewing platform at the top, designed by famous architect Sir Norman Foster, to see the fantastic views.
Our landmark timber-framed building is one of the greenest in Britain and houses the record breaking Greenbird, the world’s fastest naturally powered vehicle on land, a cinema and a brand-new Eco classroom.
There’s also lots to see outside too. A massive solar tracker harnesses the power of the sun, creating energy for the Centre as it follows the sun’s progress throughout the day. The organic gardens provide an opportunity to learn about non-invasive methods of food cultivation, and the heritage orchard is a showcase of historically-important fruit varieties.
Children love it here. It’s fun, informative and thought-provoking – and it brings subjects like maths and science to life right before their eyes.
The education programme covers many aspects of the National Curriculum, introducing and developing the idea of sustainability through a variety of activities. Explore power generation, renewable energy, recycling and waste, organic food production, wildlife gardening and biodiversity. We can tailor our activity programmes to suit your requirements.
The Green Britain Centre is not just for children – we welcome families and visitors all year round to experience the thrill of climbing the turbine and sharing our vision.
